About Department
The Department of Economics at K. J. Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, established in the academic year 1960–61, has a distinguished history of over six decades in delivering quality education in economics. It combines academic excellence with a holistic approach to education, fostering intellectual growth, critical thinking, and professional development. Over the years, it has emerged as a dynamic hub for students aspiring to excel in the discipline of economics. The department offers both undergraduate and doctoral programmes, equipping students with theoretical, analytical, and applied knowledge aligned with contemporary trends in the field.
Academic Programmes
The department offers two undergraduate pathways: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with a major in Economics and Bachelor of Commerce with Economics as a minor. Both programmes aim to provide a robust foundation in economic theory, quantitative techniques, and their real-world applications. The curriculum is designed in accordance with UGC guidelines and focuses on key quantitative and analytical areas such as Mathematical Economics, Statistics for Economics, and Econometrics, ensuring that students develop the technical skills needed in today’s data-driven economy.
Innovative Teaching-Learning Practices
The Department adopts interactive, student-centered pedagogies to create a vibrant learning environment. Teaching methods include classroom lectures, ICT-enabled sessions, group discussions, seminars, field studies, and blended learning through the college’s Learning Management System (LMS). A notable highlight is the certificate course in Stock Market Operations, delivered in blended mode to give students practical exposure to financial markets. Additionally, value-added courses like Commodity Markets and Stock Market Operations are regularly updated in consultation with industry experts to enhance employability.
To further support student learning beyond the classroom, the department has developed a repository of videos on case studies, numerical problems, and practical aspects of economic theories, available through the LMS. These resources enable self-paced and repetitive learning, particularly beneficial for students who find quantitative methods challenging. They also assist students preparing for competitive exams like CUET, JAM, and other postgraduate entrance tests at reputed institutions.Department is also having its own website “Somaiyanomics” managed by students under the guidance of teachers.
