About Department
The Department of Economics was instituted in 1960. The Department offers undergraduate courses such as B.A. and B.COM, a three-year duration semester-based course. It has made a qualitative contribution in research activities and education in the field of economics since its initiation. Presently, Dr. Shubhangi B. Patil is the Head of the Department, specializing in Industrial & International Economics. Departmental strength also consists of six assistant professors, among them four are the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) specialized in various areas of economics.
Department offers six papers in TYBA including Econometrics and Mathematical Economics which make the course more practical and skill oriented. Our department has special cabin which helps students in group learning. Department always follows pragmatic approach in the teaching learning process. Thus, along with regular teaching. Department of Economic also regularly organizes various academic activities and co-curricular activities through Economic association. Department also executes its academic autonomy by offering various Certificate courses with additional credits like Certificate Course in Basics of Share Market Operation and Certificate Course in Basics of Mathematics for Economic Analysis, Research Methodology I & II, Basics of Econometrics etc.
Faculty of the department keeps updating themselves through their participation in various workshops, training programs, research activities like research paper writing & presentation in international & National, State, Conference, seminar and publish paper in peer reviewed, referred journals, UGC Care listed journals, Scopus Index journals etc. Our faculty also undertake minor research projects related to finance and social and economic issues. Department is consistently working on the skill development of the students. Our department strives to reach standard of excellence in teaching and research activities. Faculty also train students in research activity & encourage them to present & publish their research papers in reputed journals.

K J Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, Vidyavihar Mumbai is premiere academic Institution with autonomous status having introduced the CBCGS (Choice Based Credit and Grading System) to cater the needs of the learner with a focus on learner centric curriculum. Curriculum is revised after every three years after obtaining the inputs from the alumni, industrial experts, subject experts and the teachers. In tune with the University of Mumbai's curricular structure, UGC guidelines and NAAC expectations regular designing and development of quality- based curriculum with local, regional, national and international relevance leading to excellence. The revision of the elective , core, ability enhancement and the interdisciplinary courses in under graduate as well as as post graduate program is undertaken after every three years. CBCGS with its rich and varied palette of courses opens up newer avenues of learning beyond the opted discipline across the departments.

The Department organizes Industrial Visits, Study Tour to RBI, BSE, SEBI & NSE, and Workshops, Guest lectures, Seminars, Exhibition, and various competitions like PPT presentation competition, Essay writing competition, Diagram making Competition, Mock Stock Competition, Quiz Competition, Poster making and Presentation Competition, Extempore Competition, Elocution Competition, Debate Competition etc. for all round development of the students. Department also organizes it annual festival “Ecofest” Department has also published its newsletter named “Fincredible” where students can get information about economic concepts, theories & its application in simple language.
