About Department
Established in 1960, Department of Marathi works towards making students aware about Marathi Language, Literature and Culture; developing their various linguistic skills, and strengthen their lives by offering them Job-Oriented Courses under Academic Autonomy.
Stalwarts in Literary field, like PadmaBhushan Mangesh Padgonkar, prominent Literary Critic Vasant Davtar, Poet Vasant Patankar, Poet Gurunath Dhuri, Sahitya Akademi Award winner Anant Bhave, Poet Vasant Kokaje… served the department with their intellect and dedication towards education.
Marathi is the 15th most spoken language in the world with a huge and wide presence in all of the modern media. On this background, the Department of Marathi believes that this situation is a fertile land for all the applied language skills and probably a right time to focus on it.

Prof. Abhijit Deshpande is currently serving as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Marathi at K J Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, Mumbai. A scholar of literature and cinema, his academic and creative interests span the fields of Marathi literary studies, film appreciation, and cultural criticism. Deeply passionate about cinema, he has been actively engaged in film society movements since 2003. He is the founder of Pratima Film Society (Dombivli) and Drushti Film Forum (Somaiya Vidyavihar Campus), and currently serves as a trustee of the renowned Prabhat Chitra Mandal, Mumbai.
He has held key positions in the Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI) – Western Region, and has been on the selection committees of several prestigious film festivals including MAMI, Third Eye Asian Film Festival, and Pune International Film Festival (PIFF). Since January 2024, he has been a member of the India chapter of FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics).
Prof. Deshpande has contributed significantly to the field of film studies through his work as an editor, writer, and translator. From 2015 to 2018, he served as the editor of Vastav Roopwani, the only journal dedicated to film studies in Marathi. He has authored and translated numerous essays on film theory and criticism, and was a member of the Cinema Editorial Subcommittee for the Marathi Vishwakosh (Encyclopedia). He is frequently invited as a speaker and resource person for film appreciation courses and cultural events.
He is presently pursuing his Ph.D. from the University of Mumbai on the topic “From Novel to Film: A Narrative Analysis.” In addition to his academic and cinematic pursuits, Prof. Deshpande is also an accomplished poet and author. His autobiographical memoir Ek Hota Karsevak (2004) has seen six editions. He edited the poetry series Aajachi Kavita (2001), comprising eight volumes published by Lokvangmay Gruha. His editorial work Aswastha Shatakachi Kavita features selected poems by Vasant Abaji Dahake, accompanied by critical commentary.
