About Department

The Department of Sanskrit came into existence along with inception of the college in 1960. It is one of the few departments in Mumbai that offers a graduate programme in Sanskrit. The department offers courses not only in Sanskrit literature but also in various branches of knowledge (Shastra-s) in Ancient Indian Knowledge Systems and in modern Sanskrit literature. It follows an interdisciplinary and pragmatic approach to study the original texts in Sanskrit language. Staging plays in Sanskrit language has been the forte of the department. It aims to popularize Sanskrit language, promote interdisciplinary research in Indian Knowledge Systems and grooms core linguistic competency among students

Syllabus

K J Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, Vidyavihar Mumbai is premiere academic Institution with autonomous status having introduced the CBCGS (Choice Based Credit and Grading System) to cater the needs of the learner with a focus on learner centric curriculum. Curriculum is revised after every three years after obtaining the inputs from the alumni, industrial experts, subject experts and the teachers. In tune with the University of Mumbai's curricular structure, UGC guidelines and NAAC expectations regular designing and development of quality- based curriculum with local, regional, national and international relevance leading to excellence. The revision of the elective , core, ability enhancement and the interdisciplinary courses in under graduate as well as as post graduate program is undertaken after every three years. CBCGS with its rich and varied palette of courses opens up newer avenues of learning beyond the opted discipline across the departments.

Activities

The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts program in Sanskrit that involves the intensive study of Vedic, classical, and Modern Sanskrit Literature. Besides, introduction to various branches of knowledge (Shastra-s) in Indian Knowledge Tradition is also incorporated in this Programme. The programme also involves practical aspect of language application through modern Sanskrit theatre.

This course is spread over 6 semesters. Each semester under this course makes sure that students internalize the ability to decode Sanskrit language and various Shastra-s to meet present needs.

  • To inculcate basic linguistic skills in Sanskrit language
  • To introduce masterpieces in Sanskrit literature and build ability to study primary sources.
  • To popularize Sanskrit language at mass level
  • To promote interdisciplinary and cross linguistic studies
  • To inculcate research aptitude with respect to Indian Knowledge Systems

Pedagogy

Constructivist framework of learning is followed. Along with regular lectures, participatory approach is encouraged with activities such as question- answer session, group discussions, group assignments, individual assignments, class tests, oral exams, presentations Performance of new dramas and skits etc.
