About Department
The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1972 under the supervision of academicians with a futuristic vision. The department offers Sociology at the undergraduate level with the objective to initiate students into academic engagement with social issues and aims towards nurturing responsible citizenry amongst students.
The post-graduate programme in sociology was introduced in the academic year 2019-20. The department offers diverse papers suited to contemporary times. This programme aims to equip students with unique and solid analytical skills and competency in research.
The curriculum provides a thorough grounding in theoretical and methodological foundations of the discipline.Introduction of supervised research projects, especially at the TYBA level helps imbibe research culture among students. Varied courses offer insights into areas such as culture, globalization, social change, gender, sexuality, education, workplace relationship, etc.
The department employs a ‘learning-centred’ pedagogy. Student enrichment programmes are conducted in the form of special lectures, workshops and seminars with external experts in the field. The faculty engages the students in beyond the syllabus scholarly activities. Towards this end, the methods employed are: project-based learning, interactive learning and experiential learning.
This courses aim at producing multi-skilled, flexible, ‘informed” and contributing workforce. In-depth knowledge of the society prepares students for careers in varied fields such as; Lifelong learning, civil society organizations, teaching, consultancy, government and non-government bodies and the private sector.

In tune with the University of Mumbai's curricular structure, UGC guidelines and NAAC expectations regular designing and development of quality- based curriculum with local, regional, national and international relevance leading to excellence. The revision of the elective , core, ability enhancement and the interdisciplinary courses in under graduate as well as as post graduate program is undertaken after every three years. CBCGS with its rich and varied palette of courses opens up newer avenues of learning beyond the opted discipline across the departments.

The Social Health Education Committee works under the auspices of the department of Sociology to facilitate interaction in positive ways, build meaningful relationships, adapt to social situations and thus imbibe the students with life skills.
