It is an Under-graduate, full time three-year course designed to develop intellectual and professional abilities of learners, in the realm of English and it’s Literature. The objective of this course is to prepare students to use English proficiently, think critically and identify career paths in domains related to English and Literature in English. This program of six semesters is designed to introduce learners to various aspects and genres of English Literature. The teaching-learning process is within a pedagogical framework that is interesting and need- based.

The learner, intending on pursuing this undergraduate program, is promised a training in nuances of English, in its pragmatic and literary glory. This course provides a baseline for learners to launch careers in academics, media, advertising, writing and publishing.

English Athenaeum

English Athenaeum is a flagship association of the Department of English. This Literary Association conducts various curricular and co- curricular activities to enthuse the literary interests of the students of the college. The activities of English Athenaeum conducted every year are eagerly awaited events for the young budding literary talent. The curricular activities like Workshops on ‘Literary Appreciation and Creative Writing’ are organised under the aegis of English Athenaeum. Internationally acclaimed literary scholars like Gabriel Rosenstock (the celebrity Irish Poet, Haikuist and Translator), Prof. William Wolak (a celebrity poet and Critic, Professor of Creative Writing at Bill Paterson University, Wayne, New Jersey, USA) and Rochelle Potkar (a renowned poet, Haikuist, and Novelist) have graced the occasions as the Guest Speakers and trainers. The competitions organised by English Athenaeum such as Declamation, Rendition of the world-famous Soliloquies, Vocal and Instrumental Western Music Performances, Recital of self-composed Poetry and Literary Quiz are the much awaited extra-curricular activities which receive an overwhelming response of the students every year.

Courses

First Year (Semester- I)
English Compulsory

The objective of this course is to assist the learners in utilising standards of language in spoken and written form for persuasive purposes. It introduces students of English and vernacular media of instruction to the potency of English language, by familiarisation of grammatical standards of English.

English Ancillary

The course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of literature in English thereby enabling them to build vocabulary and understanding of linguistic and literary skills while reading world literature, partition literature in the form of short stories and novels.

First Year (Semester- II)
English Compulsory

The objective of the course is to empower learners to understand English as a widely accepted language of expression for multiple purposes. The exercises in this course train learners in utilising the standardised, logical structures, spoken and written etiquettes and exercises in literature.

English Ancillary

The objective of this course is to enhance sensitivity of learners towards Humanity by exploring the numerous expressions of English Literature and understand various messages underlying the various forms of classic poems and plays prescribed in the course of Literature.

Second Year (Semester- III)

The objective of this course is to acquaint the learners to varied forms of expression by Indian writers as in Diasporic and Postcolonial literature in the form of short stories and novels, in English and translated into English from other Indian languages.

The purpose of this course is to introduce and familiarise learners to varied terms, nuances and genres of American Literature.The prescribed concepts, short stories and novels showcase the ethos of 20th century America and its implications in World Literature.

The objective of this course is to familiarise learners with concepts of communication, the role and forms of print and audio-visual media of various types, along with their functions and responsibilities, in Civil Societies.

The purpose of this course is to familiarise learners with potentialities of communication as well as the features, functions and responsibilities of print and audio-visual media. The course introduces learners to journalistic writing, prerequisite for careers in Journalism.

Second Year (Semester- IV)

The course is a study of significant works of eminent writers, studied in translated versions, in order to empower the learner with an understanding of English and forms of literary expressions like poems and plays, in the context of Indian subcontinent, employed for discourses in literature engaging Dalit, Women and Social Realities.

The course enhances the understanding of American, Afro-American and Multicultural implications, by introducing students to poems and plays that reflect universal, human concerns.

The course leads learners to explore potentialities, prospects and characteristics of various Mass Media such as Dark Net, Citizen Journalism, Blogging, Crowdfunding on Social Media and their implications in academic and professional paths.

The course is designed to enhance awareness, interest and practical implications of Electronic Journalism via exercises in understanding trends and career options.

Third Year (Semester- V)

The objective of this course is to introduce learners of Literature to trace the characteristics of Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, as these are foundations that have supported the establishment of canons of Literature.

This course intends to introduce learners of Literature to basics of Literary Criticism in order to sensitize them to academically recognized, critical approaches and literary theories.

The objective of this course is to strengthen the linguistic and grammatical foundations of a student of Literature.

The course aims at introducing learners to understanding specific eras of Literary canons and history of English Literature, with focus on novels and poems of the Romantic Age.

The course aims at highlighting the canons studied in their pragmatic versions in literary manifestations of modern literature of England , with signature works of eminent poets and short-story writers, as prescribed coursework.

The objective of this course is to familiarise students with fundamental aspects of drama and theatre and highlight their origins in descriptions and plays by Greek and Sanskrit scholars of the 3rd and 4th centuries.

Third Year (Semester- VI)

The course introduces learners to the pioneers of English Literary history by identifying and exemplifying the characteristics and works of Restoration and Augustan periods.

The objective of this course is to empower learners to analyse, interpret, explicate and evaluate literary texts by engaging in exercises in viewing Literature through lenses of various Literary theories.

This course fulfils the need of students to engage in professional and independent purposes of pragmatic use of language.

The course aims at introducing learners to understanding characteristics of specific eras of Literary canons and history of English Literature, with focus on specialities of the Victorian Age.

The course provides perspectives to view literature through lenses of tradition and contemporary approaches by means of reading literary creations in the form of modern British novels and plays.

The course introduces learners to concepts of modern drama and theatre and understanding drama through lenses of Black Comedy, Absurdism, Modernism,Social Realism and Postmodernism.
