Bachelor of Arts | B.A.

Bachelor of Arts (History) Programme is a three year, full time programme spread across six semesters. It aims to familiarize the students with regional, national and international history.The focus of the programme is on the history of personalities, events and ideas that defined the past and paved the way for the making of the present. It aims to develop amongst the learners varied interests in historical events and processes. It attempts to introduce the students to multiple perspectives which can be embraced to understand historical ideas and
events. It also provides training in historical methodology along with an exposure to allied disciplines like Archaeology, Cultural Studies and Tourism.

History Association

The Department organises various co-curricular activities through History Association. The association provides platform for the discussion on the historical themes. It conducts various activities like Poster Competition, Career Guidance Programme and Study Tours etc.

Courses

First Year (Semester- I)

The paper traces the history of India in the colonial era beginning with the Revolt of 1857 to the eventual independence and partition of the Indian subcontinent. Apart from the political narrative of the colonial period, the paper also focuses on the socio- cultural developments in the era.

First Year (Semester- II)

The paper attempts to introduce the learners to the post-independence history of India. It delves into the economic, political and social history of India from the Nehruvian era to the beginning of the Liberalisation era of the 1990s and India on the threshold of the 21 st century.

Second Year (Semester- III)

It introduces the learners to the dawn of the modern age in world history and takes them on a historical journey on the important milestones of the 18 th and 19 th century world like the French Revolution, American War of Independence, Age of Nationalism of 19 th century and growth of Imperialism leading to the First World War.

The paper focuses on the journey of the Indian society and culture from the pre- historical times to the Harappan Culture which saw the first wave of urbanisation in India to eventually the Vedic Age and the emergence of Mahajanapadas and the birth of Jainism and Buddhism.

Second Year (Semester- IV)

The learners are steeped in the historical development of the world from the ashes on the First World War to the emergence of decolonised nations. The fascinating period of Fascist counter-revolutions, dictatorships in other nations and the beginning of national struggles for independence in Asia and Africa are introduced.

The historical journey of ancient Indian history continues from the Age of Mahajanapadas to the Age of Empires in India. Focus is also put on the history of South India and the achievement of Ancient Indians in the field of art, literature and science.

Third Year (Semester- V)

The learners understand the transformation of Indian society from ancient to medieval times with strengthening of feudalism and the beginning of invasions of Ghazni and Ghori. The paper focuses on the history of Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagara Empire and the Bahamani Empire.

It aims to make the learner understand the basics of archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics and historical tourism. The students explore the world of archaeological discoveries.

It familiarises the students with different form and techniques of information and communication. It focuses on varied topics from oral communication (folk, classical) to the use of Information Technology of the contemporary times.

The course covers the History of Maratha rule

 

 

The learners’ journey through one of the most turbulent times of world history navigating through the Cold War politics between the USA and the USSR and its manifestations of different parts of the world.

The students learn about inter-disciplinary research methodologies. They are introduced to different stages of research process like development of a research problem, hypothesis, methods of data collection (survey, case study, etc.) and tools of data collection (schedule, questionnaire, etc.).

Third Year (Semester- VI)

The learners continue to understand the medieval times with the beginning of the Mughal rule under Babur to the last important Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Apart from political and administrative history of the era, importance is also given to cultural developments.

The course covers ancillary sciences like Museology, Archival Science, Anthropology and Cultural Studies

It familiarises the learners to various aspects of cinema, radio, theatre and the workings of public relations.

The course explores the history of Modern Maharashtra

The focus of this paper is on the history of the Asian continent to which our nation belongs. The learners are introduced to the historical developments in the nations of China, Japan, West Asia (Middle-East) and also the regional organisations like SAARC and ASEAN.

Learners are introduced to the classification of sources for different periods of Indian history. They are made familiar with different trends in historical research (feminist, post- modernist and subaltern approaches) and the process of report writing.
