A comparative study of cognitive strategies used to resolve air traffic conflict between air traffic controllers and general population using eye tracking machine
- Abstract
The present study looks at the difference between air traffic controllers (ATCs) and general population (Novices) in using cognitive strategies to resolve air traffic conflict situation. The eye movement pattern data of all participants was captured using a double computer configuration remote eye gaze tracker, and was analyzed using specialized software. The obtained results show significant difference between ATCs and Novices on physiological responses or parameters viz., pupil diameter, number of fixations, average fixation time, saccade frequency, scan path length, blink frequency, and duration, and also in the attention maps while resolving a simulated air traffic conflict. Due to their domain expertise, ATCs show better cognitive strategies than general population in resolving air traffic conflicts.
