  • Abstract

The Modernist Saga: An assessment of the Poetry of Arun Kolatlar and Dilip Chitre The spirit and ethos of post-independence phase of Indian Literature in English is profoundly different from that of the colonial days. With Independence came a new wave of challenges. It was a period of transition as the nation underwent vicissitudes of experiences vis-à-vis the social, economic and political spheres. Scientific and technological advancement resulted in urbanization. This consequently transformed the face of Literature. A note of interrogation became one of the prominent facets of the contemporary Literature. To question, to examine and to scrutinize became the maxims of the modernist approaches to Literature. Religious practises, human relationships, morality, fading love towards nature etc. were some the central arenas which were interrogated rigorously by the contemporary Indian English poets. Amongst them, were the literary stalwarts -Arun Kolatlar and Dilip Chitre. Arun Kolatkar’s ‘Jejuri’ – (a collection of poems) is a classic in modern Indian English Poetry which earnestly reviews the place of Pilgrimage and the religious practises. On the other hand, Dilip Chitre, a prolific Indian English Poet embarks on a journey to assess the human relationships. This research paper aims at illuminating these modernist sensibilities explored in the poetry of Arun Kolatlar and Dilip Chitre.
