Strengthening India's Strategic Position in Response To China: The Vital Role of Quadrilateral Security Cooperation
- Abstract
China's rapid economic growth and its expanding military capabilities have redefined the security landscape, making it imperative for India to adapt its strategic responses. China's assertiveness in India's immediate neighborhood and the Indo-Pacific region has necessitated a robust and coordinated strategy. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or "Quad," comprising the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, has emerged as a crucial element in India's evolving foreign policy approach. This article argues that given the structural constraints in the India-China relationship, Quadrilateral security cooperation is of utmost importance for India. The Quad's revival underscores the consensus among these democratic nations to address shared concerns in the Indo-Pacific. India's hedging strategy, which involves both engagement and balancing of relations with China, may provide short-term political benefits. Still, it comes with potential long- term consequences. The Quad offers a more comprehensive and collective response to challenges posed by China's assertive behavior and the evolving regional order. By examining the dynamics of the Quad and its role in India's strategic outlook, this article highlights the necessity for India to leverage this partnership in safeguarding its interests and preserving regional stability and security.
