The Interaction of Culture and Economy: Exploring the Role of Tourism in Heritage Preservation of Goa
- Abstract
The cultural economy and tourism are mutually beneficial and reinforcing sectors that offer significant economic and cultural benefits. Tourism, particularly cultural tourism, is a major driver of the cultural economy. The bane of mass tourism and the present tourism model of the State of Goa has been discussed in academic fields. Over tourism in the State has led to negative impacts on the environment, local communities, and cultural heritage. The intersection of tourism and culture, coupled with the increasing interest of visitors in cultural experiences, brings unique opportunities but also poses complex questions for the tourism sector. Maintaining the authenticity of cultural experiences while catering to tourists can be a challenging task. There is a risk of commodification of culture which can dilute the significance and reduce the quality of touristic experience.
