- Abstract
Sati has been an important discourse in Indian history. Ranging from the status of women, demographical imbalances, indispensability of marriage and husband all are intricately interwoven in the Sati discourse. While as a system, Sati was inherently placed in the Hindu tradition, the term gained widespread acknowledgement in the Jain tradition. The paper takes up the similarities as well as dissimilarities in regard to Sati concept and probes into each of these points with special reference to the Jain and Hindu religious traditions. It analyses how this construction is on the one hand different from Hindu models, and how on the other it takes up some of the more common paradigms of Hinduism.
