About Department
The Department of English, along with the College, was established in the year 1960. Its mission is to promulgate the study of English and its Literature of various nationalities penned in English amongst students. The department plays a dynamic role in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the institute. The department organizes Intercollegiate Lit Fests, Study Visits to the US Consulate Library or Media Houses, Guest Lectures by luminaires in academia and industry, and National and State-level Workshops.
The department perseveres to establish and maintain the best possible practices as per international standards of academia with consistency and regularity. It lays a special emphasis on learners’ creative thinking, critical aptitudes, and intellectual and professional abilities thereby equipping them with methodologies and strategies for the up-gradation of their capacities.
The department has inherited a legacy of stalwarts of English professors like Dr. Jaya Baliga, Dr. Radha Krishnan, Prof. Surekha Dhond, Prof. Vanashree Joshi, and Prof. Satyendra Gaur. Currently, there are six full-time faculty members in the department. Dr. Satyawan Hanegave is spearheading the affairs of the department.
The department has three sections: UG, PG and Ph.D. in English Literature. The undergraduate program consists of six semesters; it introduces learners to various aspects and genres of English Literature. The department offers 24 courses for the B. A. Program and 02 courses for the B.Com program.
The post-graduate program comprises four semesters and has 34 courses in total; it aims to deepen learners' passion for literature while developing the rigorous professional skills essential to teaching, learning, and researching English Literature. This program is designed by following the University Grant Commission's latest guidelines on Syllabi Review and Revision for autonomous colleges. The courses designed are categorized into core, elective, interdisciplinary, and ability enhancement using a uniquely integrated approach. The program aims to equip learners with theoretical knowledge and understanding whilst developing the practical skills required for better career prospects in their professional life.
The Department received permission to start Ph. D. program in English (18 Students) from the University of Mumbai from the AY 2022-23. The department has started the process of admitting students to the Ph.D. program in English; the enrollment process for the same is underway.
The learners intending to pursue the afore-mentioned programs are promised comprehensive training in English Literature, in its pragmatic and literary glory. These programs afford a sound foundation for learners to launch careers in academics, media, advertising, writing, and the publishing industry.

K J Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, Vidyavihar Mumbai is premiere academic Institution with autonomous status having introduced the CBCGS (Choice Based Credit and Grading System) to cater the needs of the learner with a focus on learner centric curriculum. Curriculum is revised after every three years after obtaining the inputs from the alumni, industrial experts, subject experts and the teachers. In tune with the University of Mumbai's curricular structure, UGC guidelines and NAAC expectations regular designing and development of quality- based curriculum with local, regional, national and international relevance leading to excellence. The revision of the elective , core, ability enhancement and the interdisciplinary courses in under graduate as well as as post graduate program is undertaken after every three years. CBCGS with its rich and varied palette of courses opens up newer avenues of learning beyond the opted discipline across the departments.
Know MoreEnglish Athenaeum is a flagship association of the Department of English. This Literary Association conducts various curricular and co-curricular activities to enthuse the literary interests of the students of the college. The activities of English Athenaeum conducted every year are eagerly awaited events for the young budding literary talent. The curricular activities like Workshops on ‘Literary Appreciation and Creative Writing’ are organised under the aegis of English Athenaeum. Internationally acclaimed literary scholars like Gabriel Rosenstock (the celebrity Irish Poet, Haikuist and Translator), Prof. William Wolak (a celebrity poet and Critic , Professor of Creative Writing at Bill Paterson University, Wayne, New Jersey, USA) and Rochelle Potkar (a renowned poet, Haikuist, and Novelist), Ms. Sampurna Chattarji (Writer) and Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi (Poet) have graced the occasions as the Guest Speakers and trainers. The competitions organised by English Athenaeum such as Declamation, Rendition of the world-famous Soliloquies, Vocal and Instrumental Western Music Performances, Recital of self- composed Poetry and Literary Quiz are the much awaited extra-curricular activities which receive an overwhelming response of the students every year
